I’ve often wondered, if someone would address this issue from the office worker point of view.
Thanks for the post.
I’ve been able to telecommute for over 10 years and it has been absolutely wonderful!
I have a family with 4 young children and very busy with activities all the time. The greatest benefit of being able to work from home is that I could spend much more time with my family without sacrificing my career ambitions. Less time on the road and the flexibility to work from home provided 24 hour accessibility for meeting (actually exceeding) my job responsibilities. My professional growth took off like a rocket as I earned promotion after promotion and my income grew accordingly.
I must say that early years of telecommuting were challenging. VPN’s were difficult to setup and sooooo darn slow….. GoToMyPC and LogMeIn were costly and frustrating with disconnects, computer lockups and poor system response time. Remote Desktop was just as bad with “mouse trailing”, printing issues and sluggish responsiveness. And the company was always concerned about the expenses that I incurred with these resources.
I’ve been using VOS for some time now and it is by far- hands down- the BEST remote system that I have ever used. I get to my company programs and files by browsing to a website from any computer. I don’t have to carry a computer when I travel because my phone gives me real-time email, calendaring and messenging and I use business center computers for proposals, financials, anything that I would do in the office. And I don’t have to worry about privacy because my information is protected at VOS.
How important is telecommuting to me now? Well, if I couldn’t telecommute I would look for another company to work for! And back to the original post- I’m glad I don’t have to go into the office and increase my risk of getting sick. Best regards to all!
